Proximar to source salmon eggs from Benchmark Genetics

Salmon eggs for Proximar Seafood’s land-based fish farm in Japan will be supplied by aquaculture genetics company Benchmark Genetics.

The Norway-based Proximar kicked off construction in February this year of its aquaculture facility at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Japan. The company aims to raise 5,300 tons of salmon from the facility to supply the Japanese market by 2024. Earlier this week, Proximar announced that it has signed a three-year agreement with automatic renewal with Benchmark.

First eggs will be delivered in 12 months from Benchmark’s facility in Iceland.

The agreement secures Proximar’s ability to obtained the required volumes for stage 1 of its plans and covers future expansion, the company said.

“Proximar is targeting the Japanese market, where quality is of absolute essence. With the increasing number of land-based initiatives, securing quality eggs is a key concern,” said Joachim Nielsen, chief executive office of Proximar. “Our agreement with Benchmark is securing us high quality eggs and stable deliveries all-year round for our production in Japan.”

As part of the agreement, Benchmark will also provide relevant technical support by allocating a designated member to our Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), said Dr Andrew Preston, Global Technical Manager for RAS at Benchmark.
