The Kingfish Company, has received a federal permit from the United States Army Corp of Engineers for the company’s planned recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility in Jonesport, Maine.

The federal permit is needed for the operation to push through. Yesterday’s approval from the US Army Corp of Engineers follows the state approval Kingfish received last year from the State of Maine.

Kingfish said it is in the final stage of the design phase for what will be the company’s first land-based, fish production facility in the U.S.

Contractor selection is now underway, according to a press release from the company.

Last month, more than 2,000 fingerlings were transported from the Netherlands to the company’s new hatchery facility in Franklin, Maine.

The Jonesport facility will enable Kingfish to provide fish to US retailers and the American foodservice industry.

The Kingfish Company is the largest producer of yellowtail kingfish in the European Union.

The company aims to deploy the same technology it uses in the Netherlands in its Jonesport facility.

The  Jonesport facility has an estimated output of 6,000 to 8,000 yellowtail annually .
