Welcome and Keynote: Lessons Learned from Atlantic Sapphire

Speaker: Karl Øystein Øyhaug, chief financing officer & managing director at Atlantic Sapphire

Atlantic Sapphire has made headlines in the aquaculture industry these past few years. Within months of each other, a mass fish mortality took place at its Florida RAS facility and a huge fire destroyed stock at its Denmark RAS facility. These incidents caused huge losses for the company. Karl Øystein Øyhaug, chief financing officer & managing director at Atlantic Sapphire, is looking to share lessons learned in the past year and how the company hopes to help transform the future of aquaculture.

Panel: RAS is always greener

Moderator: Maddi Badiola, project manager of HTH Full Spectrum Aquaculture
Panelists:
  • Esben Johnson, founder and CEO of Singapore RAS
  • Megan Sorby, operations manager at Kingfish Maine
  • Siri Tømmerås, commercial director land-based at AKVA Group

As the industry looks to build bigger and more high-tech RAS facilities, sustainable operations becomes important in protecting the environment and the bottom line. Maddi Badiola, RAStech Magazine columnist and project manager of HTH Full Spectrum Aquaculture, will be speaking to a panel of RAS producers about how they are creating greener and more eco-friendly operations.

Panel: Thinking outside the salmon box

Moderator: David Kuhn, Associate Professor, Virginia Tech
Panelists:
  • Joe Cardenas, founder and CEO of Aquaco
  • Tom Sorby, operations manager at Kingfish Maine
  • John F. Taylor, salmonid biology expert at AquaMaof Aquaculture Technologies Ltd.

While the salmon industry is a growth driver for land-based fish production, more fish and shellfish species are slowly growing its share of the overall RAS production pie. In this panel, we talk to RAS producers who share their experiences and unique challenges of growing different species in a recirculating system.

Presentation: Working together for the future of land-based salmon

Speaker: Yonathan Zohar, program leader for RAS-N and SAS², Inst. of Marine and Environmental Technology, University of Maryland (UMBC)

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently awarded $10 million towards SAS², a set of projects to make large-scale, sustainable land-based aquaculture a reality in the United States. Yonathan Zohar, professor and chair of marine biotechnology at University of Maryland, is the program leader for these projects. SAS² builds on the Recirculating Aquaculture Salmon Network (RAS-N), which is also led by Zohar, with the goal of connecting industry partners to develop salmon RAS.

Panel: Investing in RAS around the world

Moderator: Jean Ko Din, editor of RAStech Magazine
Panelists:
  • Roy W. Høiås, CEO/Founder, Lighthouse Finance
  • Jamie Stein, director at Fonte Capital Ltd. and co-founder of Devonian Capital
  • Erik Tveteraas, investment director at NuFrontiers, Nutreco

A panel of investors in the RAS industry talk about their investment interests to help RAS professionals understand potential growth markets around the world.

Could microbiology be the key to unlocking the full potential of anaerobic digestion for treating RAS solid waste? An engineer’s perspective

Presented by Abhinav Choudhury, environmental research engineer at The Freshwater Institute

Anaerobic digestion is a biological process that could be effective for treating different waste streams (sludge, mortalities, offal) generated in recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facilities, in addition to producing renewable energy. This presentation will discuss challenges associated with the digestion of these waste streams and why microbial analysis could be a useful tool for engineering solutions to some of these challenges.

On DEMAND VIDEO
Performance, processing yields and fillet composition of six strains of rainbow trout reared in a semi-commercial scale freshwater RAS

Presented by Curtis Crouse, research support specialist at The Freshwater Institute

The presentation highlights the results from a recent Rainbow trout growout trial to 3.5 kg conducted at the Freshwater Institute. The impacts of genetics, ploidy, maturation, and artificial smolting on growth, survival, and fillet composition and their implications are discussed.

On DEMAND VIDEO
Feeding market-size salmonids in depuration systems: Effects on off-flavor, weight loss, and fillet quality

Presented by John Davidson, research scientist at The Freshwater Institute

Depuration is a proven finishing procedure that effectively remediates off-flavor in RAS-produced salmonids; however, fish weight loss can occur during extended feed withholding periods that coincide with this process. Therefore, research was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of feeding market-size Atlantic salmon and steelhead rainbow trout in depuration systems. These studies found that feeding reduces fish weight loss without negative impact to off-flavor elimination rate when these species are purged in pre-disinfected partial reuse systems supplied with water containing negligible off-flavor levels.

On DEMAND VIDEO
Experiments investigating the use of peracetic acid as a RAS water disinfectant

Presented by Chris Good, director of research at The Freshwater Institute

This presentation highlights a number of Freshwater Institute studies on peracetic acid (PAA) and its application as a water disinfectant in recirculating aquaculture systems. Initial studies included examining PAA to prevent post-vaccination saprolegniasis in Atlantic salmon, and the comparison of semi-continuously applied PAA in RAS with previous research findings on ozone. Follow-up studies included examining both the toxicity of PAA to various life-stages of Atlantic salmon and the bactericidal efficacy of PAA against a range of pathogens in RAS water. Finally, the impacts of low-dose PAA application on fluidized sand biofilter performance is briefly discussed.
