The development of effective standard operating procedures for RAS disinfection, including water, tank and pipe surfaces, and biofilters, is currently an area requiring both evaluation of existing practices and research focusing on novel approaches. Paramount to the sustainability of the RAS industry is the adoption of alternative, more environmentally-friendly disinfectants. Survey results from European and North American RAS producers indicate a wide range of disinfection approaches, even among different facilities within the same parent company.

These survey results will be discussed, along with in-house research on peracetic acid applications in RAS to either improve water quality or to disinfect water to prevent opportunistic pathogen-associated mortality. Future disinfection research plans will also be discussed.
