LAXEY has partnered with Marel Fish to deliver processing equipment and software for a new land-based salmon slaughterhouse.

The agreement plays an important role in LAXEY’s ongoing project to build a facility producing 32,000 tons of salmon annually. The first phase in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, has already been completed. The first batch of smolt was transferred to the facility at the end of 2024, and the first harvest is scheduled for the autumn of 2025.

“Having a clear overview of the processing, strong traceability, and the ability to ensure efficiency at all stages of production is incredibly important to us,” said Kristmann Kristmannsson, processing and procurement manager at LAXEY.

Marel said it welcomes the opportunity to support LAXEY in its growing endeavours.

The agreement includes Marel’s Smartline Grader and AXIN software, both widely used in fish processing facilities worldwide, to provide LAXEY with the precise size grading and optimal operational efficiency it needs.

AXIN software is said to provide access to real-time data, enabling and supporting decision-making that continuously improves production processes. Marel’s Smartline Grader size-grades salmon with “high precision and speed.” It works with AXIN software, ensuring production data is traceable in real-time.

“Our customers want reliable data, high-quality products, and technology that can predict their production line’s status,” said Skúli Sigurðsson, vice president of Fish at Marel. “We are proud to collaborate with LAXEY on this project and support their journey to set new benchmarks in aquaculture.”
