Gaia Salmon poised for post-smolt facility construction

Gaia Salmon is building a 32,000 square-metre post-smolt production facility near the township of Husøy on Træna in Norway.

The post-smolt facility will be designed for an annual capacity of 7,200 tonnes annually. The company aims to have a production volume of 50,000 tonnes (head-on-gutted) of salmon in 10 years.

Aker International AG reportedly announced a deal to invest in this new facility that is work NOK 155 million (US$20.8 million), according to The Fish Site. This would give the investor firm a 25.3 per cent ownership in the company.

Gaia Salmon secured its plot of land last June and entered into an agreement with the local municipality to build in an industrial area nearby. The company is currently paying more than NOK 600,000 (US$60,100) in annual rent, but with the option to buy the plot after five years, according to iLaks.no.

Construction is expected to begin in the summer, later this year.
