Florida-based company Blue Star Foods continues to grow its land-based aquaculture presence with its recent acquisition of a recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) technology firm.

Blue Star’s purchase last week of Gault Seafood, LLC is only its second acquisition of a RAS company this year. The 20-year-old Beaufort, South Carolina-based firm Gault Seafood developed a unique RAS technology meant for harvesting Atlantic Blue Crab during the specie’s off-season.

In June this, Blue Star completed its purchase of Canada-based RAS pioneer, Taste of BC Aquafarms Inc.

Rodrigo Mezerhane, a senior project manager at Blue Star, said his company hopes to use Gault Seafood’s technology to provide Atlantic Blue Crab to the North American market all year round.

“The existing crab season starts in March in Louisiana, and moves slightly northward every couple of weeks until you hit September in New Jersey,” he said. “Outside of this window, it’s almost impossible to get any of this product and bring it to the North American market. We believe with this technology, we will be able to satisfy consumer’s desire to enjoy the Atlantic Blue Crab all year long.”
